<image:title>November 10th Program - SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER Dr. Joanna Lambert</image:title>
<image:caption>Born and raised in industrial England, and an immigrant to the rust belt of the United States, Joanna Lambert spent her formative years observing animals in heavily urbanized landscapes. She has spent her adult life making up for this by traveling to some of the most remote regions of the planet in order to study wild animals in wild places. While her work has now taken her to every continent, a major focus has been on equatorial Africa where for almost 30 years she has studied mammal ecology, with a focus on primates and carnivores. There, she has witnessed extraordinary challenges to biodiversity and human quality of life – realities that have fundamentally impacted her approach to science. In addition to her ongoing research in Africa, Lambert has current work underway on carnivore nutrition and resilience at sites throughout the Rocky Mountain West, including Yellowstone National Park and right here in the greater Denver area. Formerly faculty at University of Oregon, University of Wisconsin - Madison, and University of Texas, as well as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, Lambert also serves as advisor to the United Nations Environmental Program and the IUCN Species Survival Commission. She was voted Oregon’s Emerald Professor of the Year, held a Vilas Professorship at UW-Madison, and is an elected fellow of both the AAAS and the Linnean Society of London. In 2015 Lambert landed at University of Colorado - Boulder, where she is a Professor in the Program in Environmental Studies as well as faculty in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for Microbial Exploration. She spends as much time as she can in wild places, striving for optimism and solutions in a challenging world.</image:caption>

<image:title>November 10th Program - Special Guest Speaker: Becca McCloskey</image:title>
<image:caption>In the middle of her Oregon State University education, Rebecca McCloskey took some time away from school to serve as an intern at Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia Africa. Those three months would change her life and direct her career. After graduating, Rebecca began her career at Wildlife Safari in southern Oregon caring for African cheetahs. After creating a successful breeding program for this notoriously difficult to breed species, her aspirations led her to a curator position at the Denver Zoo where she’s worked for the last 11 years. Rebecca has worked with almost every mammal species at the zoo from giraffes to snakes, elephants to otters. Knowing and caring for animals in a zoo-setting fosters a deep level of intimacy and knowledge about individuals and species. Her work at Denver Zoo has also opened up opportunities to assist conservation efforts across the world. From tracking carnivore spoor in Botswana to trapping and collaring fishing cats in Thailand, Rebecca’s passion for animals and conservation has never waned.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lindsey Kirkman has worked in animal care at the Denver Zoo for over 8 years, first as a pachyderm keeper and now as the Assistant Curator of Pachyderms (or the “keeper of the keepers” as she likes to describe it). She has had an affinity for rhinos, specifically, ever since doing an observation project on them in middle school at the local zoo. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Wildlife Biology, she began her zookeeping career at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. Her travels have taken her to both Tanzania and Nepal, where she has been fortunate to see rhinos in the wild. Her most recent love is a greater one-horned rhino calf born at the Denver Zoo on February 22, 2020.</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 Festival Program - SPECIAL GUEST</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Mikki McComb-Kobza is passionate about sharing her love of the ocean, the joy of exploration and the critical importance of science. Her research focuses on the sensory biology and ecological physiology of sharks, skates and rays. Mikki has been a tireless advocate for sharks, highlighting their global declines and framing new directions for their conservation. Mikki has been invited to speak, educate and conduct research at labs and institutions in South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Her outreach efforts have been documented in film, magazine and radio by the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel's Shark Week, and CBC National Radio Canada. Mikki strives to bridge the gap between research and public engagement. She believes that when people are aware, they care and when they care, they act. Her current position as Executive Director of Ocean First Institute allows her to promote research, conservation, and sustainability. The Institute supports expeditions and a variety of education initiatives which have reached over 100,000 students in 35 countries. Mikki holds a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from Florida Atlantic University and is the author of numerous scientific publications.</image:caption>

<image:title>January 30, 2022 Program - Max Lurie</image:title>
<image:caption>Max was raised along the rugged coastline of Maine and learned to climb in Acadia National Park and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. For more than fifteen years he has traveled in pursuit of this passion. Max began his career as a mountain guide while earning his bachelors degree in Earth Sciences at the University of Maine. While in school his studies took him to Denali National Park, Alaska and the Cordillera Blanca, Peru. Since 2009 he has been traveling to climb and guide in Alaska, Canadian Rockies, Cascades, Rainier, Red Rock, Sierras, South America, Tetons, Yosemite and more. Currently Max lives in Boulder, Colorado with his partner Katie and their dog Dexter. Max is an American Mountain Guide Association certified Rock and Alpine Guide, as well as an accomplished alpinist. Max has been climbing since 2004 and traveling to the greater ranges in pursuit of his passion. Currently, Max’s greatest passion is ice, mixed and alpine climbing. He enjoys steep technical ice and mixed climbing on long routes in the mountains. When he isn’t guiding, Max is training to improve his own technical skill and quiet his mental landscape in constant pursuit of his next objective. He can be found honing his craft on the many cliffs surrounding his home in Boulder, Colorado or up in Rocky Mountain National Park. Max primarily works in Rocky Mountain National Park and along the Front Range of Colorado. However, he frequently travels to Ouray, Red Rock, Rainier, North Cascades National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Canadian Rockies and abroad for climbing and guiding.</image:caption>

<image:title>2022 Festival Program - TBA - Opening Night Film - RIVER</image:title>
<image:caption>Dairy Arts Center — Gordon Gamm Theater at 7:30 pm Ticket for Opener Click Here Click for Trailer Throughout history, rivers have shaped our landscapes and our journeys; flowed through our cultures and dreams. RIVER takes its audience on a journey through space and time; spanning six continents, and drawing on extraordinary contemporary cinematography, including satellite filming, the film shows rivers on scales and from perspectives never seen before. Its union of image, music and sparse, poetic script will create a film that is both dream-like and powerful, honoring the wildness of rivers but also recognizes their vulnerability. Spoken word by Willem Dafoe “River does not request your attention. It demands your surrender. Flowing against the current of today’s commercial moviemaking, it’s out to slow the pulse rate and induce a trancelike state of reflection.” -Sydney Morning Herald “An impressive visual event for the big screen.” -the Guardian</image:caption>

<image:caption>I earned a PhD at the University of Chicago in 1973, but there were no volcanoes there I started working on volcanoes in Patagonia in 1974 as a post-doc at Columbia University and have continued this work for the last 48 years with support from the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society and the Chilean and Argentinian governments. I joined the faculty in the geology department at CU in 1979, and retired just last year. My research work involves understanding the origin of volcanoes in the context of plate tectonics and studying the history of eruptions of individual volcanoes in order to predict their future impacts. I also work with archaeologist tracing the sources and distribution of volcanic rocks like obsidian found in archaeological sites. Most of my work has been in Patagonia but I have also been involved in work on volcanoes in Colorado (yes Colorado has volcanoes), the Mediterranean, and the middle east.</image:caption>

She joined the Denver Zoo in April 2022 to lead the international conservation efforts. Angela most recently helped launch the new Global Center for Species Survival, a partnership between the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Indianapolis Zoo. Previous to this, she was the Chief Conservation Officer at Rainforest Trust where she led the conservation department in overseeing more than 150 projects to establish priority protected areas for species conservation around the world. She is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission and the World Commission on Protected Areas, and sits on the Advisory Boards of William & Mary’s Institute for Integrative Conservation and the International Rhino Foundation. Before returning to the US in 2018, Angela lived in Cambodia, Kenya and the United Kingdom for ten years, working with international organizations such as Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). She worked with WCS’s Field Veterinary/Global Health program for over nine years, coordinating and conducting research at the nexus of wildlife and human health. After living in Southeast Asia, Angela realized the immensity of the human pressures on natural resources and the critical need to find sustainable solutions, so she went on to complete her thesis analyzing the socioeconomic impacts of marine conservation in East Africa. She stayed on in Kenya, working with local NGOs in East Africa, assisting with strategic planning, development and capacity-building before joining ZSL to manage their programs in the Russian Far East, Indonesia and Thailand, focused on tiger conservation. At ZSL, Angela led the organization’s largest country program that focused on Sumatran tiger conservation in the context of green growth and public-private partnerships in Indonesia.he international conservation efforts. Beneath our feet, Uranium atoms in the Earth’s crust hold incredibly concentrated energy- science unlocked this energy in the mid-20th century, first for bombs and then to power submarines and the United States led the effort to generate electricity from this new source. Yet in the mid 20th century as societies began the transition to nuclear power and away from fossil fuels, a long-term PR campaign to scare the public began, funded in part by coal and oil interests. This campaign would sow fear about harmless low-level radiation and create confusion between nuclear weapons and nuclear power. With unprecedented access to the nuclear industry in France, Russia, and the United States, iconic director Oliver Stone explores the possibility for the global community to overcome challenges like climate change and reach a brighter future through the power of nuclear energy an option that may become a vital way to ensure our continued survival sooner than we think. "A strong, clear and courageous film. I admire it for defying all trends." - Werner Herzog, Filmmaker "An intensely compelling, must-see documentary." - Owen Gleiberman,Variety</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nic Venner Age: 21, Hometown: Lakewood, Colorado "Climate impacts in the U.S. are real and getting worse. We're running out of water, we're facing record-setting heat waves, and wildfires and superstorms are becoming more common. We must act now to protect our planet and our civilization." As a young Catholic, Nic is drawn to the intersection between their church and environmental stewardship, and was inspired by Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home. “Our moral call to protect the common good (and not the profits of a selfish few) is clear in the Pope’s call to action,” says Nic. When Catholic groups came on board to support the lawsuit, they wanted to “thank God for their support in our fight to save our Nation’s climate.” Where they live in Colorado, Nic enjoys fishing, but due to wildfires and variable water flows from droughts and floods, they have not been able to go fishing for the past three years. Nic and their family grow some of their own food, but hail, rainstorms, drought, and pests have ruined their garden for several years.</image:caption>

We work with governments and organizations all around the world to facilitate the rescue of animals from small cages or enclosures and bring them to outdoor habitats hundreds of acres in size. We currently care for roughly 750+ rescued animals coming from places like Ukraine, Argentina, South Korea, and Puerto Rico across 4 locations totaling over 33,000 acres of space for the animals. <image:title>2024 Festival Film & Events Program - Opening Night Film - HARD MILES with special guest COACH GREG TOWNSEND</image:title>
<image:caption>Dairy Arts Center — Gordon Gamm Theater at 7:30 pm Ticket for Opener, Click Here Click for Trailer Hard Miles tells the uplifting true story of the bicycling team at Rite of Passage's Ridge View Academy, a medium-security correctional school in Colorado. The film follows beleaguered coach Greg Townsend (Matthew Modine) as he rounds up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students for a seemingly impossible bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. As the beginner bicyclists battle heatstroke, speed wobbles, and the greatest enemy of all cyclists -- a chafed crotch -- they must learn to stop fighting and ride together as a peloton. The bicycle serves not just as a means of transportation, but as a test; a way for each of these young men to see what they are truly capable of, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As caring social worker Haddie (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) attempts to be the voice of reason, coach Greg Townsend pushes the boys to their limit, and cracks begin to form in the peloton. Ultimately, Greg's words will ring hollow unless he can apply his coaching advice to his own life and make amends with his dying father. In the sweltering desert, the boys reach a crossroads and must decide whether to continue down the path of least resistance, or take agency of their futures and pave the way to forgiveness. "Matthew Modine finally gets the starring role he deserves, the first that’s fully tested him since his Eighties heyday, in this true-life sports drama about the healing power of cycling.” “[T]he film is a combination of spectacular scenery, arduous exertion, inspiring pep talks, adolescent rebellion, emotional confrontations, and lessons learned by both the teenagers and their leader.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greg Townsend is an avid cyclist. He started racing bikes when he was a teen. "Being a troubled kid myself, I was one of those things that got me on the straight and narrow," Townsend told CBS News Colorado. As a social worker, Townsend works with troubled teens, and he uses cycling as therapy. "The atmosphere, the environment, the experiential education that they get out of it, and the physiological part of riding a bike, kind of does a lot of really amazing things if you want it to," he explained.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and focus on power systems, I have spent the past 8 years working exclusively in renewable energy. I have worked across the three major pillars of wind, solar, and battery energy storage. While working on the construction of renewable energy projects, I helped build over 1.5GW of wind generation in Kansas, Colorado, and Missouri along with the design and build of numerous High Voltage interconnections for both wind and solar. Transitioning from the construction side of the equation to the development owner of renewables I was a lead engineer on the Edwards Sanborn project in California that has over 800MW of PV and 3GWh of Battery Energy Storage. Additionally leading engineering for the implementation of multiple stand alone BESS, BESS+PV, BESS+Wind projects. In the past few years, I started Saga Energy with 3 other co-founders focused on developing a renewable Rocky Mountain Region, www.sagaenergy.com.</image:caption>

<image:title>February 2, 2025 Program - Director’S Statement</image:title>
<image:caption>As the director of Half-Life of Memory, I am honored to share this film, which explores the complex and contested legacy of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. This project is profoundly personal to me, as my father is among those who worked at Rocky Flats and endured the severe consequences of the nuclear arms race. Half-Life of Memory is not just a film; it is a personal mission to unveil the concealed realities of Rocky Flats and to amplify the voices of those who have been affected. Through meticulous research and heartfelt testimonials, Half-Life of Memory exposes the lasting impacts of nuclear arms production on individuals and communities. With rising nuclear tensions and a new buildup of nuclear weapons underway, addressing the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats is more urgent than ever to ensure that lessons from its past are not ignored. Half-Life of Memory stands as a tribute to my father, to all the workers who sacrificed their well-being, and to the countless lives impacted by nuclear weapons production. It is my hope that this film will honor their stories and serve as a catalyst for meaningful action.</image:caption>

<image:title>2025 Festival Film & Events Program - Opening Night Film - THE LOST WOLVES OF YELLOWSTONE features Dir. Tom Winston and Rick Schwolsky, with a panel discussion including CU Professor Joanna Lambert, Rocky Mountain Wolf Project board member, and journalist Daniel Glick, who reported on the initial wolf capture in British Columbia.</image:title>
<image:caption>Dairy Arts Center — Gordon Gamm Theater at 7:30 pm Thursday Opener, SOLD OUT Added new screening on Saturday at 1PM Click for Trailer A captivating film from Yellowstone National Park, where a group of biologists led by a charismatic woman set out to bring back the wolves – a project that changed their own lives forever. The wolf holds a special place in the animal kingdom. The proud and feared predator is almost a mythological creature in the story of humanity’s own history. So when the decision was made in 1995 to reintroduce the wolf to the vast Yellowstone National Park, it was not without opposition. Leading the project was charismatic biologist Mollie Beattie, who, along with her colorful and sympathetic team of colleagues, was charged with bringing wolves back at a time when they had been extinct for 50 years. But not everyone was thrilled with the idea that wolves would soon be allowed to roam free again. The project became a political battle that required all of Beattie’s skills as a biologist, diplomat and storyteller. The documentary ‘Lost Wolves of Yellowstone’ unfolds this magnificent story as an epic drama with a twinkle in the eye – not least from Beattie’s idealistic and charming colleagues, who experience the amazing and beautiful footage from back then for the first time. This event is in collaboration with the Rocky Mountains Wolf Project. Mountainfilm Festival - Audience Choice Feature Film Award Directed by Tom Winston Runtime: 93 minutes</image:caption>

<image:caption>Prior to Closing Night film, the festival will honor Manny Almonte with the festival’s EARTH ANGEL statuette for his work in environmental advocacy and education. Growing up in the bustling city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Almonte sought peace and freedom during weekend, holiday, and summer visits to his father’s home in Bonao, an inland town at the foothills of the Pico Duarte mountains. “I was able to experience nature beyond the beach. Usually you think of the Caribbean Sea and how beautiful the beaches are, but when you go into the land, you find beautiful mountains, streams, and wildlife—and that is something that I always looked forward to,” said Almonte. “I didn't experience nature intentionally; it was simply life.” Today, Almonte shares that way of life with young Black and Brown men from New York City and Denver and uses it as a vehicle to help them create connections with nature, their passions, their inner selves and their communities through his non-profit organization Young Masterminds Initiative and its Camping to Connect outdoor mentorship program. Manny lives in Denver, Colorado.</image:caption>
